Good to know
Most call problems are a weak internet connection or a permission that is switched off. Sit close to your router and check the app is allowed to use the camera and microphone.
Common questions
Why can the other person not hear me?
Almost always you are muted. Look for the microphone icon on the call screen, and if it has a line through it, tap it once to unmute. If that is not it, the app may not have permission to use the microphone. Open your phone Settings, find the app in the list, and switch Microphone on. Taking off headphones and starting the call again also clears most cases.
Why does the picture keep freezing?
A frozen or jerky picture is nearly always a weak internet connection, either yours or the other person's. Move closer to your wifi router or into a room with a stronger signal. Turning off your own camera for a moment eases the connection. If it is the other person who keeps freezing, ask them to move closer to their router too.
How do I give an app permission to use the camera or microphone?
Open the Settings app on your phone, scroll down to the list of apps, and tap the one you are using, such as WhatsApp or Zoom. You will see switches for Camera and Microphone. Make sure both are switched on, then go back into the call. The app may need you to start the call again before it picks up the change.
Can an iPhone video call an Android phone?
Not with FaceTime, which only works between Apple devices like iPhones, iPads and Macs. To video call between an iPhone and an Android phone, use an app that runs on both, such as WhatsApp, Zoom or Google Meet. Install the same app on both phones and you can call each other freely.
The call keeps dropping, what can I do?
Dropped calls usually come down to the internet connection. Sit close to your wifi router, and avoid moving around the house during the call. Close other apps running in the background, and make sure the call app is up to date in your app store. If it still drops, restart your phone and try once more, which clears most stubborn problems.
