Common questions about video calls
Does the other person need the same app?
Yes — both people need the same app to call each other. WhatsApp to WhatsApp, FaceTime to FaceTime, and so on. WhatsApp is the most popular choice because almost everyone already has it.
How much data does a video call use?
A typical video call uses around 250–400MB per hour. On Wi-Fi this is free and unlimited. On mobile data it will count towards your monthly allowance. If you are on a limited data plan, try to make video calls on Wi-Fi.
The video call keeps freezing — what do I do?
A frozen or choppy picture almost always means a weak internet connection. Move closer to your Wi-Fi router, or ask the person you are calling to do the same. Closing other apps on your phone can also help.
The other person cannot hear me — what do I do?
First check that you haven't muted yourself — there is usually a microphone icon in the call. Also check that the app has permission to use your microphone: go to your phone Settings, find the app, and make sure Microphone is turned on.
Is a video call free?
Yes — WhatsApp, FaceTime, Zoom and Google Meet are all free to use. The only cost is your internet connection, which you are already paying for.
